Biographical Note
Born on May 22, 1843, in Claiborne County, Tennessee, Henly Fugate rose to the level of captain in the army of the Confederate States of America (company A of the 63rd Regiment, Tennessee Infantry). Following the Civil War, Fugate moved to Abingdon, Virginia in 1873 where he started and operated businesses involving lumber and coal. He also served as a trustee of the Stonewall Jackson Institute and the Abingdon Male Academy until his death in 1913.
