This collection details the receipt of a slave, John, in Lynchburg, Virginia, for work on the city's fortifications in October 1863. The slave was sent by Mrs. Jane Nance of Bedford County, Virginia, and received of William H. Prease. Collection contains the signature of E. E. Mason, but the impressment was ordered by Col. W. H. Stevens.
