Abstract

The collection includes papers from Robeson's tenure as a student at Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College and Polytechnic Institute, Columbia University, and Johns Hopkins University, as well as subject and research files from his nearly 50 years as an instructor and professor at VPI, dating from 1899 to 1952.

Abstract

This collection contains an order on behalf of the Emperor of Japan, given by the Japanese Government and Japanese Imperial General Headquarters proclaiming the surrender Japan to the Allied Powers. The document orders all Japanese Forces to surrender at once to Allied forces and is signed by signed on behalf of the Emperor of Japan and the Japanese Imperial General Headquarters, the Supreme Commander of the Allied Powers, and representatives of the Allied Power nations.

Persian Gulf War Pamphlets,

Abstract

The collection consists of six 3" x 6" pamphlets that were dropped into Iraq by U.S. aircraft during the Persian Gulf War (January-March 1991). The pamphlets urge the surrender of Iraqi troops in printed Arabic. Several Pamphlets depict cartoons and images of the destruction of the Iraqi army by Coalition Forces.

Norfolk & Western Railway Steam Locomotive Roster,

Abstract

This collection contains roster information of steam powered locomotives used by Norfolk & Western Railway written by Arthur S. Bixby, Sr. in 1978. The roster gives a brief overview of the history of Norfolk & Western Railroad and Norfolk & Western Railway. The steam locomotive information begins in 1881 and continues to 1961 with the phasing out of steam driven locomotives. Collection contains a letter from the author explaining the abbreviations used throughout the roster.

David H. Gordon Papers,

Abstract

This collection consists of a Confederate pay and discharge certificate and short biography of David Harrison Gordon. He enlisted as a private in Company L of the Confederate Army's 4th Virginia Infantry on April 16, 1861, in Blacksburg, Virginia, and was discharged after his death due to disease at Staunton on April 18, 1862.

Bentons Company (K Co., 1st Texas Infantry) is a first hand account of the deeds and actions of the Confederate Army's K Company, 1st Texas Infantry during the Civil War. Written by O. T. Hanks, a member of K Company, the history discusses the formation of the company in July 1861 and gives detailed accounts of several battles the company participated in throughout the war. Abstract

Virginia General Assembly Bill No. 233 contains several amended versions of Bill No. 233. Each of the bills lists the rights and privileges given to free African-Americans living with in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The bill also discusses the process by which a free person can be sold into slavery if they have been convicted of a crime.

The transcripts detail interviews with Washington County residents Evelyn Campbell, Emma Josephine Poland Surber, and Nancy Johnson.
