The Marion S. Battle Papers document Battle's experiences in the United States Army during the First World War and afterwards in Czechoslovakia. Items include a report about the Czechoslovak Legion and Battle's roll in the U.S. Army Transportation Service operation to provide transport back to Czechoslovakia; photographs depicting members of the Legion and their trip on the USAT America; and photocopies of Battle's U.S. Army records.

Abstract This collection consists of a May 10, 1864, letter written by Stephen F. Poindexter of the 10th Virginia Cavalry, Confederate Army, at Union Hall, Franklin County, Virginia. Written to his cousin W.H. Smith of the 2nd Missouri Infantry of the Confederate Army, Poindexter begs his cousin to reply to his letters, inquires after the health of Smith's uncle Jim, and informs Smith of the capture of Poindexter's brother by Union Army forces. This collection contains a slave rental receipt issued by the Virginia Central Railroad Company in 1855 to Mrs. Elisabeth S. Lindsay. The receipt promises a payment of $175 to Lindsay after the one year rental period for the work of the slave, a man named Isaac, ends.
