Scope and Content

Collection consists of pages from a scrapbook including photographs and materials from Adam Finch's time attending the Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College. Materials include invitations to Maury Literary Society events, the roll of Company A from 1893, football game ribbons, and disciplinary report responses. Also included are a letter of reference from President Barringer and a letter, written by Finch, about an alumni reunion.

Biographical Information

Adam Tyree Finch was born c. 1873 in Chase City, Virginia. He attended the Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College. While attending VAMC, Finch served as the business director of the Gray Jacket. After completing his degree in 1893, Finch entered the medical school at the University of Virginia. Following the completion of this degree, Finch took a job at the Polyclinic Hospital and Dispensary of New York City. Adam Finch returned to the VAMC, now the Virginia Polytechnic Institute, in 1898 taking the position of Professor of Military Science and Tactics and succeeded Lt. Shanks as Commandant of Cadets. He also served as an Assistant Professor of Physiology and Materia Medica. Finch married Miss Elizabeth Dinwiddie Morton on September 8, 1899 in Clarksville, Virginia. Finch left VPI in Spring of 1900. Adam Finch passed away in 1933.

Collection includes scrapbook pages containing photos and materials from Adam Finch's time as a cadet and VPI.
