Soldier in the 4th Minnesota Volunteer Regiment in the Civil War. Four letters written from June to August, 1862, to his wife in Warsaw, Rice County, Minnesota, from camps and a division hospital in Mississippi. Writes that the war should soon be over because of the enemy's lack of resources. He also writes about his attack of cholera and the resulting stay in the hospital, and why he believes it is better to be a first lieutenant than a captain.
