Sergeant, then Captain, in the Battery A, 1st Rhode Island Artillery during the Civil War. Three letters written from camps in Maryland and Virginia to Saint Helena, or Sarah Helen Whitman, of Providence, Rhode Island. Writes that the autumnal coloring in the South is very disappointing compared to that in the North and that he was in command of the battery while the captain was in Providence.
