Scope and Content

Letters written by Thomas Burns to his family between August 1862 and June 1865 while he was serving with the 52nd Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry. The regiment was attached to the 3rd Brigade, 2nd Division, 14th Corps, Army of the Cumberland. He participated in engagements in Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, and North Carolina. Burns, of Richmond, Jefferson County, Ohio, was the son of Scottish immigrants and was 18 or 19 years old when he enlisted in the Union Army. The collection also contains 2 images of Burns and a letter from John B. McCarel of the 52nd Ohio to Burns' father.
