Scope and Content

This collection contains a copybook maintained by S. Harvey Johnson, a Methodist minister residing in Patrick County, Virginia around the turn of the twentieth century. The book is titled "Thoughts, Original and Selected with Incidents, Illustrations, etc." Largely religious in subject matter, the book includes sections headed "What to Preach," "How to Preach," and "Life, Its Sources and Purpose," among others. Though the book itself is undated, it contains one passage copied from a speech delivered in 1885. The copybook is accompanied by an untitled, undated poem by Paul Hayne.

Biographical Information

The 1900 U. S. census lists S. Harvey Johnson, a 45-year-old preacher, living in Tunstall District, Patrick County, Virginia. Also living in the household were his 31-year-old wife, [Lulu?], and childrenTeresa, L. Inez, and [Willard?] D. No further record of the family could be located. The copybook had been found in a farm house in Ashland, Virginia.

Paul Hamilton Hayne was born in Charleston, South Carolina in 1830. After graduating from the College of Charleston in 1852, he established a law practice but soon abandoned it to pursue a literary career. During the Civil War, he served in the Confederate Army. Though he published numerous collections of his poetry, Hayne is more widely remembered for his work as a literary critic and magazine editor. He died at his home, Copse Hill, in Grovetown, Georgia, in 1886.
