Massanutten Mountain Photograph
Scope and Content
The Massanutten Mountain Photograph was taken in the early twentieth century by Hugh Morrison Jr., of Woodstock, Virginia. Sepia-toned, the photo measures approximately 13" x 17" and is mounted on a larger backing. Below the photo is a caption, which reads in part, "View from Massanutten Mountain, looking west, and showing Woodstock, several of the horseshoe bends in Shenandoah river, and North Mountain in the distance."

Biographical Information
Massanutten Mountain is a ridge between Virginia's Blue Ridge and Allegheny Mountains, bisecting the Shenandoah Valley and extending from Rockingham County in the south to Shenandoah County in the north. It has been known variously as Buffalo Mountain, Fort Mountain, Peaked Mountain, and Three Topped Mountain. At its highest point, Massanutten Mountain is 2,922 feet above sea level.
Hugh Morrison Jr. was born in 1871. He was a professional photographer in Woodstock (Shenandoah County), Virginia and served as the town's mayor from 1926 to 1938. Morrison died in Woodstock on September 18, 1950.
