Scope and Content

The L. Baugh Letter is a handwritten missive from a landowner in Abingdon, Virginia, written during the American Civil War. In this letter, Baugh informs Mr. J. G. Wood of Estillville, Virginia, that his property is for sale, not for rent. Baugh suggests Wood trade with the man authorized to contract the sale in order to purchase the home.

Biographical Information

L. Baugh was likely Leonidas Baugh, the editor of the Abingdon Democrat from 1849 to 1853. In 1853 Leondis became the postmaster of Abingdon and eventually the deputy clerk of the Washington County Court. Leonidas was active in politics and even corresponded with the then governor of Tennessee, Andrew Johnson.
