Henry Clay Sommerville Letters

Scope and Content

Born in Hampshire County, Virginia; surgeon for the Confederate Army during the Civil War. Collection consists of letters, written mostly from January to April, 1864, to Sommerville while in Danville and Lynchburg, Virginia, from friends in Liberty (now Bedford), Virginia. Most of the letters focus on town news and gossip.

Map shows the distribution of natural resources throughout southwestern Virginia. It is in color and contains an explanatory legend with a note indicating likely future railroads. The map additionally contains an illustration of Penington's Gap in Lee County, Virginia, and a geological cross-section of the region.

Southside Garden Club Records,

Abstract

The Southside Garden Club started as a committee of the Blacksburg Women's Club. The Garden Club became its own separate organization in 1930 and the Southside Garden Club was formed in 1941. Materials in the collection include newspaper clippings, minutes and yearbooks from the Blacksburg Women's Club. Southside Garden Club materials include organization reports, minutes, pressbooks, yearbooks, and scrapbooks.
