World War II

The Ralph E. McCoy Collection contains materials collected by McCoy: publications, correspondence, programs, and Civil War memorabilia.

The Military & Wartime Cookery Collection consists of a variety of manuscript and ephemeral materials relating to the history of military and wartime food and cooking. Items in the collection date from 1884 to 1965, though the bulk of the collection covers parts of World War I through World War II (1917-1945).

The collection consists of several Army and other U. S. military publications, primarily relating to World War II, including: Newsmap, Newsmap Overseas Edition, World News of the Week, and A. M. S. Bulletins. There are additional reports and charts from other agencies. Materials in the collection date from 1942 to 1969.

The collection includes a flyer (c.1945) advertising the collection of clothes and shoes for World War II efforts.

The collection consists of letters to Ralph M. Brown, librarian at VPI, from John P. Sawyer, who graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1940.

Selective service records of Taylor of Larned, Kansas, during World War II. Taylor was disqualified from Aviation Cadet Training due to color blindness, and entered the enlisted reserve corps and was assigned inactive status to Pan American World Airways in Miami, Florida. In 1945 Taylor had to go in front of the selective service board again for possible duty.

Born in Columbus, Ohio, moved to South Charleston, West Virginia in 1925. Attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute from 1937-1941. Awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor and Purple Heart during World War II. Collection includes photographs, clippings, citations, and papers collected by Lt. Col. John Coulter for his book on the six Medal of Honor winners who were students from Virginia Tech. 

Veterinarian who established the Salem Veterinary Hospital and served as a major in the Veterinary Corps of the US Army during World War II. Collection includes scrapbooks of a 1932 ROTC camp, Burma, New Guinea, other photographs taken during World War II, and China in 1981. There is also a scrapbook containing letters, cards, newspaper clippings, and photographs of Richard Nixon, Dwight Eisenhower, Gerald Ford, Nancy Reagan, and Charles Robb. 

The collection consists of 33 postcards and 8 photos, from World Wars I and II.

The World War II Sugar Rationing Pamphlets include four pamphlets published during the height of food rationing in the United States during the Second World War. The pamphlets promote rationing of sugar at the homefront and provide recipes that can be made using a substitute for sugar.
