Abstract

Resident of Cincinnati, Ohio, and a corporal in the 138th Regiment Ohio National Guard (originally formed as the 2nd Ohio Volunteer Reserve Militia) during the Civil War. Collection consists of two volumes of a manuscript diary, copied in 1865 of entries Bonsall wrote between May 23, 1861 (his 16th birthday) and 1865. The diaries also contain sporatic entries dating through 1878.

Scope and Content Information Among those papers included in the collection is an edited transcript of the diary of Jasper Hawse (1835-1905), a Civil War soldier born in Hardy County, Virginia. At the beginning of the Civil War Hawse enlisted in the 14th Regiment, Virginia Militia, which became the 7th Virginia Cavalry Regiment in March 1862. Union soldier in the Civil War, possibly in the Army of the Potomac. Correspondence consists of two letters to Bradley's family. One letter was written November 10, 1861, for Bradley to his brother by Darius Russell, about Bradley's ill condition.
