Scope and Content

The collection consists of the Civil War discharge papers of Stephen Curwin, an enlisted union soldier in the 45th Regiment of the Pennsylvania Infantry. The papers detail Curwin's physical description, date of enlistment, and date and reason for discharge. The discharge papers were completed and approved by Col. Jonathan S. Belknap of the 85th New York Infantry.

Biographical Information

Stephen Curwin was born in Mifflin County, Pennsylvania in 1839. He is described as being five-feet-ten, of fair complexion, and having red hair and grey eyes. Before entering service, Curwin was a farrier by trade. Curwin enlisted with Company C of the 45th Regiment, Pennsylvania Infantry on September 27, 1861. The regiment participated in many battles including Secessionville, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Vicksburg, and Petersburg. Curwin was injured or became ill during the conflict and received his discharge papers on December 6, 1862 at a convalescent camp near Alexandria, Virginia.
