Scope and Content

A single document reporting the roll of the 31st Virginia Infantry, Company E, for May 1862. At the top the document indicates it was filled out and submitted by Captain Samuel A. Gilman under the command of Colonel John L. Huffman. Roll indicates the company consisted of 100 men with a total of 75 present for active duty. Also contains a short historical sketch of the regiment's activity for May 1862, including information on locations of the unit and a record of wounded members.

Historical Information

The 31st Virginia Volunteer Infantry Regiment was an infantry regiment raised from volunteers for service in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War. Most of the regiment came from the area which eventually became West Virginia. It fought mostly with the Army of Northern Virginia and was active for the entirety of the conflict. The unit was active in Lee's Cheat Mountain Campaign and Jackson's Valley operations. Later the 31st Virginia participated in numerous campaigns including Seven Days' Battles, Cold Harbor, Shenandoah Valley, and Appomattox.

Company E was formed entirely from Highland County, the only county in the 31st not located in the new West Virginia. During May 1862 the regiment joined up with Stonewall Jackson. The 31st Virginia reaching Front Royal by the end of the month and helped push Union forces out of their camp there.
