This collection contains papers (primarily correspondence and Civil War documents) from the Nelson family of Clarke County, Virginia, 1783-1872, n.d.
Newlee Family Papers,
The collection includes a paper of the history written in 1980 of Smithfield Plantation, the Preston family, and Virginia Newlee (Robert's daughter) written by George Shackleford. In addition there is an obituary of Colonel Newlee, and a newspaper clipping from 1916 with the muster roll of the Company of Virginia Volunteers in the Mexican War. Also includes a muster roll of Company L, Fourth Virginia Regiment, of which Newlee was captain.
Newport News, Virginia, Civil War Letter
Letter from a Union corporal from Massachusetts in the Civil War. Writes to his brother at home, telling him that he will try for a commission when he soon returns on furlough. Has heard that there are a number of chances for commissions in colored regiments that the Governor of Massachusetts was raising, and he hopes to become an officer in one.

Letter from H. E. Norton, a soldier in a Michigan brigade headquartered at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas just after the Civil War, describing journey from Washington and complaining that the brigade had been "sold" by the Michigan governor for political purposes.
